Status Summary

A Status is a temporary effect or condition that is currently affecting an individual. These can be a benefit to the individual or a detriment that penalizes them. Most status effects have a duration given, after which the status is removed, while others have a particular action associated with them which must be taken to remove the status.

If an individual is affected by more than one status or multiple instances of the same status, the effects are cumulative unless otherwise noted.

Status Effects

  • Advantage

One of the most common status effects. This indicates that the individual has Advantage on a particular Check. (See System Checks: Advantage and Disadvantage)

  • Burdened

This is a general measure of how much you are carrying and what effect the size and weight of the objects you carry has on your ability to perform. The more burdened you are, the more difficult it is to move and act.

    Unburdened

As long as the total Bulk of your equipment and the objects you carry is equal to or less than half your carrying capacity, you are considered Unburdened. You can move and act freely as if you carried nothing.

    Lightly Burdened

When the bulk of objects you carry exceeds half your carrying capacity, you become Lightly Burdened. This status has no direct effect, but some Abilities or Actions cannot be used or function at reduced effect when you have this status.

    Heavily Burdened

When the bulk of objects you carry exceeds your carrying capacity, you become Heavily Burdened. You suffer Disadvantage 1 on all Movement and Attack Checks and your Movement speed is reduced by 1 for every 5 Bulk beyond your carrying capacity, rounded up.

    Overburdened

Carrying so much that you can't move. Your Movement is reduced to 0, you automatically fail any Movement Check or Attack Checks.

  • Defeated

When an individual is Defeated, they are removed from combat and unable to participate further. A Defeated individual is Unconscious, Paralyzed, Knocked Down, and unable to take actions.

Defeated individuals are typically on the brink of death and unable to be restored without proper care or powerful magics. Simple healing effects which restore Vitality do not remove the Defeated condition.

An individual is Defeated when their Vitality is reduced to 0 or they have received a significant enough number of Afflictions.

  • Disadvantage

One of the most common status effects. This indicates that the individual has Disadvantage on a particular Check. (See System Checks: Advantage and Disadvantage)

  • Exhausted

You have pushed your body beyond what it is able to handle, and your ability to act has been reduced. You become exhausted when you have incurred Fatigue in excess of your Fortitude.

Each instance of Fatigue beyond your Fortitude Attribute inflicts Disadvantage 1 on every Check and increases the Tempo of all Actions you take by 1. This means that if your Fatigue is equal to your Fortitude + 3, you have Disadvantage 3 on every Check and the Tempo of all Actions is increased by 3.

If your Fatigue is equal to twice your Fortitude, you have become completely Exhausted and fall unconscious until your Fatigue is reduced below this limit.

  • Fear

Fear is a special form of Disadvantage to applies to all Checks made against the source of that Fear. This discourages the Fearful creature from attacking or approaching an individual who inflicts Fear.

E.g. Fear 2 is identical to Disadvantage 2, except that it can be ignored when making Checks against any target which is not the source of Fear.

In addition, an individual suffering from Fear cannot approach the target of their fear unless they make a successful Check (UC Presence, DT 15 + Fear).

Using the same Action multiple times usually doesn't increase the Fear status; however, the use of different frightening effects is almost always cumulative as the target becomes increasingly afraid.

  • Knocked Down

This applies to any individual who falls to the ground against their will. Whether they are tripped, fail a Check to maintain balance, or some other effect, the individual has been Knocked Down.

This status typically lasts only a single turn, after which, the individual is simply considered to be Prone.

  • Paralyzed

A Paralyzed individual cannot move but remains fully conscious. They cannot use Movement or resolve any Actions that involve physically moving their body. A paralyzed individual can still take Actions which rely on only mental, spiritual, or other non-physical capabilities.

  • Posture

This is a category of statuses that defines the physical position of an individual's body and how they currently carry themselves. Changing posture is considered Movement.

Standing - The default posture. All individuals are considered to be standing unless otherwise noted. Any other position tends to impose penalties to Agility or ability to attack or move quickly, usually by applying Disadvantage to these Checks.

Sitting - Sitting down on a surface, such as a chair or the floor.

Kneeling - With one or more knees on the ground.

Crawling - With all limbs on the ground, usually while attempting to minimize the ability to be targeted.

Prone - Lying down, whether face up or face down. This status reduces an individual's Speed to 1.

  • Stunned

Disoriented, staggered, dazed, and otherwise unable to act. A Stunned individual is unable to take Actions of any type and may only pass their turn.

  • Taunt

A Taunt is a special form of Disadvantage to applies to all Checks except those made against the individual using the taunt. This discourages the Taunted creature from attacking other individuals.

E.g. Taunt 3 is identical to Disadvantage 3, except that it can be ignored when making Checks against a specific target: the taunter.

Using the same taunting Action multiple times usually doesn't increase the Taunt status; however, the use of different taunting effects is almost always cumulative as the target becomes increasingly agitated.

  • Unconscious

This individual has lost the ability to process conscious thought. They are Knocked Down and normally cannot take actions.
