Mysticism

Faith, religion, and calling upon the power of gods and spirits is called Mysticism. The ability to call upon divine intervention requires great piety and dedication to one’s beliefs. All divine workings and revealed mysteries rely on the power of Faith.

Growing in Faith

Faith is measured in Spiritual Attunement (SA), which is an abstract representation of how devoutly one follows their chosen faith in their beliefs and actions. All Mysticism Abilities require having sufficient levels of Spiritual Attunement to function and may affect an individual’s current SA when used.

Gaining Spiritual Attunement

Unlike with other sources of power, there is no way to easily gather Spiritual Attunement, nor is it simply granted to a follower without cost. It must be earned through devoted efforts and can be lost by failure to follow the tenets of one’s faith or through the displeasure of one’s divine patron.

The following are suggestions for ways that Spiritual Attunement can be increased outside of Ability use:

  • Converting a nonbeliever to one’s faith.
  • Spending one day in prayer and supplication and observing the daily rites of one’s faith.
  • Participating in a religious ceremony on recognized holy days.
  • Gaining the blessing of a high-ranking leader within the order of one’s faith.
  • Performing a notable deed that meaningfully spreads the influence of one’s faith.
  • Sanctifying an area or building a shrine as a holy site for one’s faith.

Losing Spiritual Attunement

Spiritual Attunement is just as difficult to lose as it is to gain. The only certain way to lose SA is to act in opposition to one’s divine patron or knowingly break the tenets of one’s faith. While most patrons are forgiving of minor infractions and don’t overly penalize their followers for the occasional minor transgression, some patrons are particularly strict, and even the most forgiving won’t overlook deliberate or repeated misdeeds.

Spiritual Attunement is normally not expended when used. Rather, calling upon divine mysteries and seeing the results reinforces your belief and your Attunement. However, should you call upon the divine and fail to see it manifest, your Spiritual Attunement immediately suffers. Whether this is a loss of faith on your part or simply a reflection of shifting divine favor is uncertain, the result is the same.

Maximum Spiritual Attunement

All are limited by their capacity to become at one with the divine. An individual’s maximum Spiritual Attunement is equal to twice their Spirit Aptitude. It can’t normally increase beyond this limit.
